MATTHEW CAVANAUGH

After a brief illness Matt Cavanaugh, 89 a resident of the county for more
than 8_ years, died Thursday night at the home, 925 South 19th street.
Mr. and Mrs. Cavanaugh observed their 62nd wedding anniversary last November.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 8:30 a.m. from the Pfeffer funeral
home and at nine o’clock from the St. Boniface church. Burial will be at
Evergreen cemetery.
The Cavanaughs were one of Manitowoc’s oldest married couples. They lived at
Maple Grove and Reedsville before moving to this city 20 years ago.
Mr. Cavanaugh was born in Syracuse, N.Y., in 1848 and when a boy the family
moved to Maple Grove. He married Miss Catherine Welch of Janesville, at Neenah,
62 years ago. They located on a farm in Maple Grove. In 1902 they moved to
Reedsville, where they resided until 1918, moving to this city. Mr. Cavanaugh
was employed as a watchman at the shipyards for 10 years.
He had lived a retired life the past 10 years. In 1925, Mr. and Mrs. Cavanaugh
celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in California, with their son, Elmer,
Los Angeles, Calif.; ten daughters, Mrs. Edward Benjii, Madison, Mr. A. B. Smith,
Kokomo, Ind., Mrs. Carl Tolstadius, Chicago, Mrs. James Reedy, Maribel, Mrs. Ben
Kings, Reedsville, Mrs. Elmer Jole, Mr. Earl Plantico, Mrs. John Pleuss, Mrs.
Emil Behne and Mrs. Dewey Elfner, all of this city; and a sister, Mrs. W. E.
Morand, Cimarron, N.M. Two brothers preceded him in death.
The body may be viewed at the funeral home from this evening at 7 o’clock until
the hour of the services Monday morning.

Couple are Wed 61 Years
An informal open house celebration is being held all day today at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Matt Cavanaugh, 925 South 19th street, who are celebrating their
61st wedding anniversary. This evening at dinner their ten daughters will join
them in observance of the event. Their only son, Elmer, whose home is in Los
Angeles, Calif., paid his parents a surprise visit about a month ago and a
reunion of the family was held at that time. Mr. Cavanaugh was not able to return
for the anniversary event.
The Cavanaughs are one of Manitowoc's oldest married couples. They lived at Maple
Grove and Reedsville during the early days of their marriage and moved into the
city in 1918. Mr. Cavanaugh, born in Syracuse, N.Y., 88 years age, is retired.
His wife, the former Catherine Welch of Janesville, is 78 years old. They were
married at Neenah by the Rev. Father Van Torl.
The daughters of the couple are Mrs. James Reedy of Maribel, Mrs. Ben Kings of
Wayside, Mrs. Elmer Jole of Manitowoc route 1, Mrs. A.B. Smith of Kokomo, Ind.,
Mrs. C.P. Tollstadius of Chicago, Mrs. Edward Benjil of Sheboygan, and Mrs. Earl
Plantico, Mrs. Dewey Elfner, Mrs. John Pleuss and Mrs. Emil Behnke of this city.
