Feb 7, 1855 Wisconsin Free Democrat but originally ran in Manitowoc Herald INFORMATION WANTED Of Hiram H. Champlin, formerly of this County
Hir am H. Champlin, former owner of the Thayersburg Mill property, has been absent something over a year, during which nothing has been heard of him. The circumstances of his leaving are as follows: Between the 20th and 28 of November, 1853, having sold his interest in the mill, and disposed of some personal estate, he left the residence of Charles H. Champlin, in Maple Grove, where he had been temporarily staying, with the avowed intention of going through Calumet and Fond du Lac Counties, for the purpose of purchasing cattle for logging. He had in his possession and secured in a belt around his person, about eight hundred dollars – four hundred in gold, and the balance in paper money. He left in the morning after the usual breakfast hour, and proceeded in a westerly or south-westerly direction, and reached the Shanty – erected by himself and Mr. Delano, for the purpose of boarding hands who were to be employed by them in logging – about noon. Here he found Mr. Delano alone, who prepared him some dinner, and at his request accompanied him to the river – about half a mile distant – and conveyed him across the river in a canoe, where the two separated, Mr. Champlin with the intention of going to Stauntonville, in Calumet County that day. Since then he has never been heard of, nor have his friends, by communicating with persons in various parts of the country where there was a possibility of his having gone, been able to obtain the remotest idea of his whereabouts.Mr. Champlin was somewhat above the ordinary height, very stoutly built and well proportioned. His weight was about two hundred and ten pounds. The expression of his countenance was mild and pleasant and his manners were quiet and unassuming. His complexion was florid, and his hair was thin and gray and worn in a braid to cover a bald place on the top of his hair. His age was about 55 years. Any person having any information that would interest his friends, will have the kindness to communicate with his wife, Mrs. Elmira Champlin of Manitowoc.
