JULIUS DAHM

JULE (sic) A. DAHM DIES AFTER A LONG ILLNESS
Well-known Hotel Keeper, City and County Official, Dies At The Hospital
Fifty-two years of active life in the business and official life of Manitowoc
came to a close for Julius A. Dahm when he died at the Holy Family hospital
here last night at the age of 52 years. Death was due to complications and
followed seven years of partial incapacity as a result of a stroke he suffered
while conducting a fruit farm in Mississippi during the two years of his life
that he was not a resident of Manitowoc. Born here on June 25, 1878, Dahm
enjoyed an unusually active life and was one of the best-known hotel keepers
of the early days and was in turn harbor master of the city of Manitowoc and
represented the Sixth ward as a member of the County Board of Supervisors for
several terms. Many stories of the unusual generosity of the man during the
time he conducted the old German House and still later the Glenn Inn have been
recounted by his associates.
Varied Experiences
The deceased was a man of varied experience in the business life of the community.
He was associated with the old Northern Elevator company, now the Bartlett-Frazier
company, as an assistant to Manager Shea, later was a foreman for the McMuellen
and Pitz company when the sewage disposal plant was built at Milwaukee and about
nine years ago left for Mississippi to conduct a fruit farm. It was while there
that he received the stroke which made him a partial invalid continuously since
that time.
He was married to Miss Jane Hamel on January 17, 1899, his wife preceding him in
death several years ago. Two children, Mrs. Vernon Hanesen of Sheboygan and Kenneth
Dahm of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; two grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Ella Welke,
Milwaukee, and Mrs. Hattie Missey, Chicago, are his immediate survivors.
Funeral Thursday
Funeral services from the Frazier mortuary, Ninth and Chicago streets, on Thursday
afternoon at 2 o’clock will be carried out under the impressive funeral ritual of
the Knights of Pythias of which Mr. Dahm was a charter member. Interment will take
place at Evergreen.
