ORDER INQUEST IN DEATH OF GIRL AGNES DASSEY KILLED AS SHE IS HIT BY CAR
Child Runs in Path of Car Driven by Mrs. F.M. Kadow on Lake Shore Road
and Meets Death
Struck by the fender of an automobile as she plunged into the path of the
oncoming car in an attempt to leave the pavement on the Lake Shore road
near the Half-Way House yesterday afternoon, Agnes Elizabeth, ten year old
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Dassey was killed. The child suffered a
fracture of the skull and is believed to have been instantly killed.
The automobile was driven by Mrs. Francis M. Kadow, 216 N. Eighth street
and was occupied by Mrs. Kadow and Mrs. Gardner who were returning from a
drive. The accident happened shortly after 4 o'clock.
Inquest to Be Held
An inquest has been ordered held by Dirtsict (sic) Atty. Lyman Fischer and
the following jury has been summoned to meet next week, Albert Zych, Emil
Schauss, George Herzog, Charles Gruhle, George Hollock and Allen Drumm.
Date for the inquest has not been set but the jury today viewed the remains
of the child.
Story of Tragedy
According to the statement of Lucile Dassey, 15 year old sister of the
unfortunate child, the two were returning from the county fair and the
interurban bus had stopped in front of their home to permit them to leave
it. After getting off on the right or lake side of the bus, the two girls
walked around the rear of it with the older sister holding the smaller girl's
hand. As they came near the center of the 30-foot highway, they noticed the
Kadow car approaching from the north and the little girl broke loose from
her sister and ran directly into the path of the approaching car. She was
stuck (sic) by the fender of the machine and was thrown to the side of the
pavement.
"We were in the middle of the road when she broke away from my hold and ran
into the way of the car," Lucile told reporters this morning. "We saw the car
as it came along and it seemed to be coming pretty fast and I was waiting for
it to pass," she said.
Mrs. Kadow's Statement
Mrs. Kadow, who suffered severely from the shock and was unable to leave her
home today, said that her car left the road as she endeavored to avoid striking
the child who had rushed almost in front of the machine when less than forty
feet from it. Mrs. Kadow said she turned off the pavement in expectation that
the little girl would stop running but the accident happened so suddenly that
efforts to avoid it were futile.
The Kadow car was proceeding between 30 and 35 miles an hour and when it was
noted that the two girls were standing on the pavement, apparently waiting for
the car to pass, Mrs. Kadow continued at the usual rate of speed. Suddenly and
without warning the girl broke away from her sister and ran into the path of
the approaching car. Seeing it was impossible to stop in time, Mrs. Kadow swung
the car to the right but the accident could not be averted, she says. After
striking the car(sic), the Kadow car continued for a short distance and came to
a halt when it crashed into and damaged a car parked in front of the Half-Way
House.
Aid Is Summoned
The sheriff's office was immediately called by persons who soon arrived at the
scene of the accident, Deputy Sheriff A.F. O'Leske and Coroner Kemper arriving
at the scene shortly after the accident occurred. After an examination, the
coroner declared the girl to be dead and expressed the opinion that death was
instantaneous. The body was brought to this city and taken to the Wattawa and
Urbanek funeral parlors.
Student at Two Rivers
The unfortunate child was a student in the Central School at Two Rivers and was
to have entered the fourth grade with the opening of the school year in September.
She was 10 years of age, being born at Marinette on March 14, 1919 but has spent
the greater part of her life in Manitowoc county.
In addition to her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Dassey, she is survived by two
sisters, Mrs. Catherine Phalan, Organ House, California, and Lucile and Clara at
home, two brothers, Joseph in the Canal Zone at Panama and Robert at home and her
grandmother, Mrs. Mathilda Goyette of Marinette.
Body in State
The body will remain at the Wattawa and Urbanek chapel on N. Eighth street between
the hours of 7 and 9 o'clock on Sunday night and friends desiring to view the
remains may do so during that time.
Funeral services will be held Monday morning at 9 o'clock at the Sacred Heart
church and interment will take place at Evergreen cemetery. Father Luby will
officiate at the services.
Talk of "Slow" Sign
Residents of the halfway hamlet were discussing today the erection of a "slow"
sign at the point on the road where the bus stops. They said that there had been
repeated narrow scapes (sic) from injury or death at this point whn (sic)
passengrs (sic) alighting from the busses to cross the super-highway, where there
is heavy, high-speed traffic.
