ALEX M.G. DUSOLD

Alex Dusold, Pioneer Printer of Manitowoc Dies Today at Age 71
Resident of Manitowoc All His Life; Rites Here On Monday
Alex M.G. Dusold, 74, pioneer printer and former publisher of the Manitowoc
________weekly newspaper printed in the German language died at Holy Family
hospital at 10 a.m. today.
Mr. Dusold had been confined to the hospital for two and one-half weeks. He
was in bed only one day prior to that although he had not been in the best
of health. He was a sufferer from heart disease.
In spite of rather poor health, Mr. Dusold continued in active charge of his
job printing business at 928 South Ninth street until a day before he went to
the hospital. His condition had been somewhat improved recently but took a
change for the worse early today.
Mr. Dusold was a life-long resident of Manitowoc. He was born here March 18,
1861. As a boy of 13 he began his apprenticeship in the printing trade. He
obtained employment with the Norwesten, German newspaper, and was so employed
when he married Miss Emily Krause at Mishicot Sept. 18, 1881.
He became affiliated with Otto H. Schmidt in the publication of the Wahreit.
This paper was merged with the Manitowoc Post, owned by Emil Baensch and edited
by Walter Wittmann. The new German paper continued to publish for several years
with Mr. Wittmann in charge of the editorial department and Mr. Dusold directing
the mechanical and job printing departments.
In late years, the Post’s subscription list was sold to a German weekly published
at Winona, Minn., but Mr. Dusold continued the operation of a job printing firm
under the name of the Manitowoc Printing company. This firm has been doing
business for 21 years.
Mr. Dusold’s father was one of the organizers of the Freier Saengerbund, oldest
German singing society in Wisconsin. Mr. Dusold served as secretary of this
organization for 17 years. He was also a second lieutenant in the old Company E,
a member of the volunteer fire department, the F.R.A., Eagles and Knights of
Pythias. He also held membership in the local typographical union for many years.
Mr. and Mrs. Dusold observed their fiftieth wedding anniversary with a dance at
Saenger hall last Sept. 18. Several hundred friends and relatives attended. The
couple received many floral bouquets and telegrams of congratulations.
Politically Mr. Dusold affiliated himself with the democratic party. He was a
candidate for register of deeds, however on the republican ticket in 1930, but
failed of nomination. At that time he expressed the opinion that a man aspiring
for office in this county had to be on the republican ticket, hence his
“democratic candidacy on the republican ticket.”
Besides the widow, there are three surviving children, two having died in infancy.
There is one daughter, Mrs. William E. Bartel of this city and two sons, Fred W.,
and Edwin W., both of this city; and four brothers, Edward and William of this
city, Oliver of Sandusky, O., and George of Sheboygan. There is one grandchild,
Bernice Bartel of this city.
The funeral will be held Monday at 2 p.m. at Pfeffer’s Funeral home. The Rev.
Paul Blaufuss will officiate and burial will be at Evergreen cemetery.
