PIONEER IS CALLED TO REST
Wm. Echtenacher, Long Time Resident of City Claimed by Death
Ill since last August and since the holidays, in critical condition,
William Echtenacher, one of the oldest residents of the city, died
at his home on Washington street Sunday night at the advanced age of
87. Mr. Echtenacher’s death occurred in the house which had been his
home for more than 60 years, at 916 Washington St. Mr. Echtenacher was
a native of Germany, born in Baden and left his home there 64 years ago,
locating in Canada for three years and then removing to this city. He
was a potter by trade and for many years was engaged in that business.
Mr. Echtenacher was married here in 1850 and with his wife celebrated
the sixtieth anniversary of their wedding September 17, the event being
most notable in character. Though past four score years of age, Mr.
Echtenacher retained his faculties and is posted upon affairs of interest
both in the city and outside. Besides the aged widow, seven children,
five daughters and two sons survive, Mrs. M. Schreiber, Mrs. W. Medow,
Mrs. J.J. Burke, Mrs. O. Bush, Chicago, Mrs. L.B. Hicks, Holland, Mich
and Emil and Gustave both of Chicago. Mr. Echtenbacher was one of the
oldest members of the Odd Fellow Order in this city, having been
affiliated with the lodges here for forty years. The funeral will be
held Wednesday afternoon with interment at Evergreen cemetery.

William Echtenacher, died Monday morning at his home on Washington street. He
was one of the oldest residents of the city, having reached the advanced age of
88. On the 17th of last September Mr. and Mrs. Echtenacher celebrated their
diamond wedding. The deceased was born in Baden, Germany, in 1822. When he was
a young man he immigrated to Canada and after residing there for a short time
he came to Manitowoc in 1850 and has lived here ever since. He was a potter by
trade and followed that occupation for many years. He is survived by his wife
and seven children, Mrs. William Meadon, Mrs. F.M. Schreiber, Mrs. J. Burke and
Mrs. O.J. Bush and Emil and Gustave Echtenacher of Chicago, and Mrs. L.B. Hicks
of Holland Mich.
The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon.
