ALOIS J. FANTA

Alois J. Fanta, 91, of 831 N. Eighth St. Manitowoc, a former alderman
of the old Fourth Ward, died early Wednesday evening at home after a
brief illness.
Christian Scientist services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Jens
Funeral Home. Manitowoc, and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery,
Manitowoc.
Mr. Fanta was born April 17, 1869 in Czechoslovakia and came to the
United States at the age of 14. He learned the tailoring trade at
Chicago and then worked in numerous cities throughout this country
as a merchant tailor, specializing in the cutting of material.
He came to Manitowoc in 1891 and married Christine Krainik here in
1892. He was employed as a tailor at O. Torrison Clothing Store in
the building now housing Johnson Hills department store, Manitowoc.
In 1901 he opened his own tailor shop at 112 N. Eighth St. and retired
in 1930.
His wife preceded him in death in 1915. He married Alvina Krainik in
1917 and she preceded him in death in 1947. A daughter also preceded
him in death.
Since 1930 he had been on the board of directors of Manitowoc Savings
and Loan Assn. and he would have been a 60 year member of Manitowoc
Masonic Lodge, No. 645 F and AM, in September. He was an alderman from
1915 to 1916 in the old Fourth Ward and a member of the Library Board
from 1935 to 1950. He was also a member of the Christian Science Church
Manitowoc.
Survivors include a son Erwin, of Manitowoc, four grand children and
two great grandchildren.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Friday where there
will be Masonic memorial services at 8 p.m.
