GEORGE FECHTER (d. 1910)

G.W. FECHTER SUMMONED BY DEATH TODAY
Well Known Business Man of City Dead After Week’s Illness
DEATH FOLLOWS A MINOR OPERATION
Gear. (sic) W. Fechter, one of the best known business men of the city who for
twenty years had been engaged in business as a stationer, died suddenly at the
family home 707 North Sixth street, at 12:45 today. Mr. Fechter’s death resulted
from erysipelas and followed an illness of one week.
Announcement of Mr. Rechter’s death came as a shock to the city. Ten days ago he
underwent a minor operation for a removal of a growth on the scalp, an operation
from which no danger was anticipated but shortly after, erysipelas made its
appearance and Mr. Rechter’s condition became alarming and two days ago it was
said that the chances were against his recovery. Everything that medical skill
and loving kindness could suggest was done for the patient but to no avail and
early in the day it became apparent that death was a matter of but few hours and
the end came shortly after noon. Mrs. Fechter and son George were with Mr. Fechter
at his death and during his illness. Mr. Fechter suffered severely.
Mr. Fechter was a native of Manitowoc, having been born in this city March 4, 1860,
being 50 years of age at the time of his death. For twenty years he had been engaged
in business conducting a stationery store on North Eighth street and up to within
ten days ago, he gave his personal attention to the business. Mr. Fechter was
married to Miss Pauline Mendlick twenty-five years ago and besides the widow, one
son, George Fechter survives. Three brothers, Charles of this city, Emil of Chicago,
and Oscar of North Yakima, Wash., and three sisters, Mrs. Hugo Richter, Miss Lucy
Fechter, of this city and Mrs. Charles White of Antigo, survive.
Out of a life of business activity, with energies unimpaired and with no warning,
Mr. Fechter was suddenly summoned and the force of the shock must add to the inten-
sity of the grief of the family and friends. Few friends were aware of his illness
and none knew that his life was endangered and it will be hard for them to realize
that he is dead. During many years in business in the city Mr. Fechter had become
widely known and he was held in universal esteem. He was active, energetic and a
good business man. He was genial and social in his daily life, and and considerate
and benevolent in his impulse and had won the respect of his friends and associates.
Mr. Fechter was a member of the Royal League and the Knights of Pythias Orders and
one of the organizers of the Social Dancing club and active in other social organ-
izations in the city. In business circles he was one of the best known men of the
city and his death will occasion keen regret to a host of business associates and
friends.
Funeral arrangements have not been made as yet. Mr. Fechter’s mother died only a
few months ago.
