ARCHIE & IDA FEHRING - Fehrings Killed in Highway Crash

LOMIRA, WIS.--A retired Manitowoc city firefighter and his wife were killed in a two car crash two miles northeast of this Dodge County community at the intersection of Highways 41 and 49 Wednesday afternoon.

The victims were identified by Wisconsin State Patrol officers as Archie Fehring, 77, and his wife, Ida, 73, of 1209 Flambeau St.

According to the State Patrol report, Fehring had been eastbound on 49 and stopped at its intersection with 41. His car then pulled into the path of an auto driven by Clarence Dille, 26, Fond du Lac, who was headed south on 41. The accident occurred at about 3:40 p.m.

Minor Injuries - Dille was treated for minor injuries at St. Agnes Hospital in Fond du Lac and then released.

The Fehring vehicle was struck in the side, pushed off the roadway and came to rest on its top in a wrecked condition. Mrs. Fehring was thrown out by the impact and died shortly after arrival at the Fond du Lac hospital. Her husband was dead on arrival.

An autopsy was expected to be performed on Fehring?s body later Thursday. Authorities theorized that he may have suffered a heart attack while pulling into the intersection.

The Fehring vehicle was equipped with safety seat belts but they were not in use at the time of the accident, it was reported.

Fehring was born May 15, 1891, in the Town of Manitowoc Rapids, son of the late Emil and Althea Jackson Fehring.

He attended Manitowoc schools and married Mabel Skelton in 1917. She died in 1928.

On Sept. 23, 1933, he married Ida Hoyer Fiestel.

Fehring joined the Manitowoc Fire Dept. when he was 18 years of age and was captain in the southside station when he took a leave of absence after 30 years of service before retirement from the department.

He then joined the Camp McCoy Fire Dept. where he was first fire chief, captain and then chief from 1944 until 1947. after his retirement from this position he returned to Manitowoc and was custodian at the Manitowoc Masonic Temple until 1964.

Fehring was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, Wisconsin Paid Firemen?s Assn., charter member of the Manitowoc Firemen?s Relief Assn., member of the Wisconsin Fire Chiefs Assn., Manitowoc Masonic Lodge, Manitowoc Chapter No. 16, Manitowoc Council No. 18, Manitowoc Commander No. 45, Order of Eastern Star 196, Scottish Rite, Tripoli Temple shrine, Milwaukee and Manitowoc and Two Rivers Shrine Club. He was a 32nd Degree Mason.

Mrs. Fehring was born June 23, 1895, at Manitowoc, daughter of the late William and Henricka Janning Hoyer, and was married to George Fiestel June 10, 1913. He died in 1918 and she was then married to Mr. Fehring.She also was a member of First Church of Christ, Scientist, White Shrine Jerusalem,Nazarene Shrine No. 8 of Green Bay, Milwaukee Assembly No. 3, auxiliary of the Twin Cities unit, Shriners Hospital No. 2, OES Auxiliary, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Rebekah Lodge and Royal Neighbors of Two Rivers.
Surviving the couple are four daughters, Mrs. George (Althea) Gaestel, Mrs. Alphonse (Elizabeth) Hartlaub and Mrs. Merl (Phyllis) Busse of Manitowoc and Mrs. Chester (Mildred) Tuesburg of Green Bay, nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
A great granddaughter preceded them in death.

Additional survivors of Mr. Fehring are six sisters, Mrs. Pearl Peterson of Cato, Mrs. Olive Watts and Mrs. Charles Caine of Chicago, Mrs. Herbert Rathke and Mrs. Ruth Ashton of Florida and Mrs. John Laake of Milwaukee.

Surviving Mrs. Fehring are four sisters, Mrs. John Goertz of Sheboygan, Mrs. William Simonsen of Milwaukee, Mrs. Walter Guse of Two Rivers and Mrs. Jesse Wetenkamp of Frankfurt, Mich. A daughter and three sisters preceded her in death.

Funeral Rites
Christian Scientist funeral rites will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jens Funeral home, Manitowoc, for both Mr. and Mrs. Fehring, Lynn Seymour will be the first reader and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.

Masonic memorial services will be at 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home for Mr. Fehring and at 7:30 p.m. OES services will be conducted for Mrs. Fehring. Memorials may be made to the Shriners Hospitals.
