Hamlet Founder, Fischer, Is Dead
John R. Fischer, 71 of 502 York St. founder of the hamlet of
Fischerville in the town of Mishicot and retired cheesemaker and tavern
operator, died Thursday at the Holy Family Hospital.
He was born in Gibson in 1881 and in 1904 married Miss Anna Kunz. He
farmed in the town of Gibson for two years and then took up the short
course in agriculture at the University of Wisconsin and learned the
cheesemaking trade.
He established a cheese factory at the small hamlet west of the village
of Mishicot, which later bore his name. He also operated a tavern,
general store and blacksmith shop in that community.
