Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at Evergreen Cemetery. Captain Trevor McClintock officiated. Military services were accorded by the VFW Otto Oas Post 659. Bernie was born Feb. 26, 1919, in Buffalo, N.Y., son of the late John and Linda Hermann Fraser. He graduated from Lakeshore Technical High School and apprenticed as a welder for Manitowoc Shipbuilding Company. In September 1943, he joined the U.S. Navy and served on the USS Gilmore (AS-16) during World War II, as a ship fitter. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 7, 1945. He then joined the Barr Construction Co. based in Manitowoc, working across eastern Wisconsin as a ditch digger and welder. On May 21, 1947, he married the former Angeline King. In 1955, he began working for the Chicago Bridge & Iron Co., as a welder and later as a supervisor constucting dams and oil storage tanks across the United states. He was promoted to superintendent and transferred to CB&I, LTD headquarted in London. He constructed refineries, depots, and pipelines all over the Mideast, including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Iraq, occasionally posing as a Canadian to avoid trouble. He was promoted to construction superintendent of the largest submersible storage tank in the world located in the Persian Gulf. Bernie retired in 1983 and bought a farm on County Road JJ, where he resided until shortyly before his death.
Bernie was quite an athlete, excelling in basketball, baseball and football. He was recognized across Manitowoc County for his championship baseball Club in Alverno, and the Kellnersville Baseball Team to several championships, with Kellnersville winning three years in a row. Bernie also played defensive end/defensive back for the Galloping Gaels, precursor to the Manitowoc County Chiefs Football Organization. He was inducted into the Lakeshore Hall of Fame in 2000. He was a life member of the VFW Otto Oas Post 659, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Mid-Lakes Rustic Iron & Antique Tractor Club, and the USS Howard W. Gilmore Association. Bernie enjoyed playing sheepshead, hunting, fishing, raising pigeons, and caring for his animals and pets.
He is survived by one son; one granddaughter; three grandsons (private). He was preceded in death by his wife: Angeline; two sons: John Fraser and Lynn Fraser; two sisters: Audrey and Myrtle; and two brothers: Kenneth and Melvin.
