Helen was born 100 percent Irish on Aug. 3, 1921 to the late Thomas and Nora Buckley Welch. She happily walked from the family farm to St. Patricks' Grade School in Maple Grove. She graduated from Reedsville High School in 1939. In 1942, she graduated from Holy Family School of Nursing in Manitowoc,and worked for the next 41 years as a registered nurse at Holy Family, St. Nicholas in Sheboygan, Lakeshore Technical College, and St. Mary's Home for the Aged.
On Oct. 24, 1942, she married Waldemar Ernst Freis in Maple Grove. Helen served God patiently as wife, mother, grandmother, stepgrandmother, sister, daughter, registered nurse, devout Catholic, dancer, bicyclist, life-long student, club member and friend to countless people.
Her vibrant love of learning kept her continually involved in organizations. Among them Friendly 149'ers and Manitowoc based Homemaker Clubs, Christian Mothers, St. Wendel choir, Peer counseling, and Fortune Finders (an investment club she joined at age 70). She was a member of St. Wendel Church in Cleveland, and later Holy Innocents Catholic Church in Manitowoc.
At age 56 in 1978, she earned a baccalaureate degree in Health Arts from the The College of St. Francis, Joliet, Ill.
Helen and her husband of 57 years were well known as dancers. They started dancing in the early 1940s; their last dance was three days before her stroke. Helen and Wally enjoyed many years of travel around the world, and their favorite destination was Hawaii.
Survivors include seven children; 15 granchildren; and stepchildren (private); also many neieces, nephews, other relatives and friends surviving. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, only sister, five brothers, and a daughter: Lori Maureen.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Dan Felton at 2 p.m. on Thursday (TODAY), Aug. 11, 2005 at St. Francis of Assisi-Waldo Site, Manitowoc, with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends at the church from 10:30 a.m. until the time of Mass at 2 p.m.
The Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 628 N. Water St., Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
Helen suffered a stroke in 1999, and the family would like to thank the caring and compassionate staff at North Ridge Medical & Rehabilitation Center,and Dr. Karl Larson and Dr. Donald DeBruyn.
