HENRIETTE FRICKE

AGED WOMAN MEETS ACCIDENTAL DEATH, FALLS IN CISTERN
MRS. HENRIETTA FRICKE FOUND DEAD IN CISTERN IN CELLAR AT HOME ON CLEVELAND AVE.,
LAST EVENING
WAS TRYING TO GET PAIL OF WATER AND FELL OVER WALL.
Another cistern drowning, similar in circumstances to the Kiel tragedy of two
days ago except that the drowning was clearly accidental occurred yesterday,
Mrs. Henrietta Fricke, widow of the late William Fricke, being the victim. Mrs.
Fricke's dead body was found in the cistern in the basement of the home on
Cleveland avenue at 5 o'clock last night.
Mrs. Fricke, who despite the fact that she was 62 years of age, insisted upon
doing her work, had planned to wash and was drawing water from the cistern with
a pail, the pump being out of order. The cistern is located in the basement and
is a large tank, bricked in by a wall about four feet high and twelve inches
wide. Mrs. Fricke had evidently leaned over too far in attempting to draw the
pail, to which a rope was attached, and lost her balance, falling into the water.
Owing to her advanced age and hampered by her clothing she was unable to save
herself.
No one was home at the time the accident happened, a son, Erwin, who made his
home with his mother, being absent at work and another son, William, who with
his wife was visiting here, had left the house in an automobile for a visit to
other relatives. Mr. Fricke had planned to return to Milwaukee today and his
mother was to accompany the party or make the trip via train with her daughter
-in-law.
Discovery of the body was made by Gus. Fricke, another son who searched the house
at 5 o'clock. Finding his mother absent he had presumed that she had accompanied
the auto party but a few minutes later when the party returned and said that Mrs.
Fricke had remained at home, a search of the house and grounds was made for her,
and upon visiting the cellar evidences of the tragic death of the aged woman were
found and investigation revealed the body in the cistern.
A hurried call was made for Dr. Gleason while the body was being taken from the
water but nothing could be done, it being the opinion of Dr. Gleason that Mrs.
Fricke had been dead more than an hour when found. The pulmotor was brought to
the Fricke home but was of no use, it being too late.
Mrs. Fricke was a pioneer resident of the city, having made her home here during
the greater part of her life. Her husband died last December and his death was a
great shock to her. A son died a year ago and grieved much over the bereavements
though she had never brooded over her loss. Yesterday she attended to her house-
hold duties and had worked about her garden as she was accustomed to do.
Five children survive Mrs. Fricke, being Mr. Samuel Price of Chicago, Mrs. O. H.
Nelson of Milwaukee, William of Milwaukee, Gustave and Erwin of this city.
Funeral services will be held from the late home on Cleveland avenue Monday after-
noon at 2 o'clock.
