CITY'S FIRST WOMAN PHONE GIRL IS DEAD
Mrs. Gilbertson, Nee Gustaveson, Dies at Milwaukee
Messages from Milwaukee last night brought announcement of the death
in that city of Mrs. Andrew Gilbertson, nee Emma Gustaveson, former
Manitowoc resident and the first woman operator of the telephone
exchange in this city when the exchange was first etsablished (sic).
Mrs. Gilbertson is a sister of Mrs. Charles Kunz and Mrs. C. Madsen
of this city.
W.W. DeLano, who was the first manager of the telphone company in
the city, recalled today that Mrs. Gilbertson was the first woman to
receive a message at central as an operator, having been engaged when
the exchange was first started. Later, Mrs. Gilbertson, then Miss
Gustaveson, was employed as a telegraph operator and was in charge of
the Sheboygan offices of the Western Union.
Death Is Sudden.
Mrs. Gilbertson's death was very sudden, and was due to a heart attack.
She was 56 years of age and is survived by her husband, Attorney Andrew
Gilbertson, and three sisters, Mrs. G. Gunderson, Mrs. C. Madsen and Mrs.
C. Kunz, and by two brothers, Charles and Herman Gustaveson.
The body of Mrs. Gilbertson will be brought here and the funeral will be
held from the home of Mrs. C. Madsen, North Sixth street, Friday afternoon
at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Ristad officiating.

Funeral services were held at 2 o'clock this afternoon from the home
of Mrs. Cornelius Madson for Mrs. Andrew Gilbertson of Milwaukee, former
Manitowoc resident. Burial took place at Evergreen cemetery. Mr. Gilbertson
accompanied the body here from Milwaukee.
