MILDRED GROB

HEART ATTACK TAKES LIFE OF ANEX-TEACHER
Mrs. Mildred Markham Grob, a Former High School Faculty Member, Dies At West Allis
Another pall of sadness hovered over the city and the Lincoln high school here
today when it was announced that Mrs. Benjamin Grob, nee Mildred Markham, for
ten years instructor in the art department of the high school and one of the
most beloved of teachers, had fallen victim of a heart attack at her home in
West Allis yesterday morning at 10 o’clock. The death of Mrs. Grob is the second
tragic death among past members of the faculty coach W.L. Johnson losing his life
a week ago last night.
The bride of less than a year was stricken without warning as she was about her
home which she entered as a bride only last July. Members of her family and
immediate friends had no knowledge of her serious illness and her sudden demise
has shocked and stunned them.
Born in Manitowoc
Mrs. Grob was a life-long resident of the city of Manitowoc, being born in the
home still occupied by her parents, Attorney and Mrs. H. L. Markham at 521 North
Fifth street, on June 17, 1895. Following her graduation from the local schools,
she entered and graduated from the art Institute at Chicago. Later she took an
advanced history course at the University of Wisconsin, continuing her studies
later at the University of California at Berkeley, California. She returned here
about eleven years ago and up until the time of her marriage last July was a member
of the high school faculty where she was admired by students and faculty alike.
During her residence here, Mrs. Grove was active in church as well as in art circles
of the city. As a member of the choir of St. James church she was an active choir
worker and was a member of the Sanctuary and St. Faiths guilds of the church. She
was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and Daughters of the American Revolution.
Services on Tuesday
In addition to her parents, Attorney and Mrs. Markham, she is survived by three
sisters, Mrs. Eugene W. Karow, Evanston; Mrs. Mark W. Culver, Frankfort, Indiana
and Mrs. Charlotte Markham Kannellos, at present at Athens, Greece, but who expected
to sail for America in the near future.
The body will arrive in the city late tonight and after being removed to the Frazier
Mortuary will be taken to the St. James Episcopal church at 10 o’clock tomorrow
morning to remain until the services at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon.
Services at the Episcopal church will be in charge of Rev. William F. Hood and
will be followed by services at Evergreen cemetery where interment will take
place.
