GARY GROTBAK
Manitowoc Boy, 18, is Victim of Car Crash
Gary Grotbak Dies; Partner Is Hospitalized
Auto Snaps Off Telephone Post 10 Feet in Air

Two Rivers - An 18-year-old Manitowoc youth was instantly killed and his passenger was seriously injured when the former's automobile left Sandy Bay Road near the city limits and ended with wheels up in a ditch after snapping off a telephone post inside the city at an early hour Sunday.

Killed was Gary L. Grotbak of 623 N. Fifth St. His companion, confined to Two Rivers Municipal Hospital, is Thomas N. Woodkey, 18, of 1215 N. 11th St., Manitowoc. It was reported that Woodkey sustained a leg broken in three places, fracture of the other leg, abrasions to the nose and a blackened eye.

Gary was the son of Mrs. Leonard G. Grotbak. Thomas' parents are Mr. and Mrs. Norman Woodkey.

Car Rolls
Police said that the car's tracks showed that the vehicle, after leaving the road, remained on its wheels for a distance of 248 feet, and evidence then gave police the assumption that the car was in the air for another 50 feet as no tracks could be found. Marks showed then that the car was on its top for another 90 feet and then rolled over in a southerly direction, where it struck 10 feet from the ground the utility pole which was snapped off at that height. The auto then swung around the pole and came to rest 39 feet south of the pole in the ditch proper.

When police officers arrived at the scene, Woodkey was found shouting for help outstretched on the ground on the east side of the street, 15 feet off the pavement. Grotbak's body was found 151 feet south of the car, 10 feet off the pavement on the west side of the street.

Born in 1942
The Grotbak auto, removed from the scene by a Two Rivers wrecking firm, was demolished.

Gary was born Nov. 16, 1942, at Manitowoc, son of Leonard Gorden and Ida Walters Grotbak. His father preceded him in death.

He attended Lincoln High School, Manitowoc, and would have graduated in June. Gary was employed part time at Gaterman Manufacturing Co., Manitowoc.

Survivors include his mother, a brother, Eric, and two sisters, Linda, and Mrs. James Brogan at home.

Funeral services will be at 10:45 a.m. Tuesday at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home, Manitowoc, and at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manitowoc, the Rev. Claude LeClair officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Friends may call at the Ninth Street entrance to the funeral home until the time of service. The Rosary will be recited at 8 o'clock this Monday evening at the funeral home by
members of the parish.
