Mrs. George Gumz, 53, of 426 N. Seventh St., Manitowoc, died Saturday morning
at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc.
Funeral services will be at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Urbanek and Schlei Funeral
Home, Manitowoc, and at 9 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rev. D.I.
Krembs will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.
The former Sylvia McCarthy was born at Manitowoc on March 28, 1902, and after
being graduated from public schools in the city attended and was graduated
from St. Mary School of Nursing at Milwaukee. She was married to George Gumz
on Feb. 23, 1933, and the couple moved to Kewaunee, remaining there until 1940,
returning then to Manitowoc.
Mrs. Gumz was a past president of the Manitowoc County Kennel Club and the
American Legion Auxiliary of Kewaunee. She was a member of the Rosary Society
of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Elks Auxiliary, the Manitowoc County
Council of Catholic Nurses and the St. Mary School of Nursing Alumni Assn.
Surviving her are the husband, mother, Mrs. Mary McCarthy of Manitowoc; three
brothers, Mark of Dexter, Ore., and Edward and Roland of Manitowoc; and four
sisters, Sister M. Rose Gertrude of Topowa, Ariz., Mrs. R.J. Kentz of Hampton,
Va., Mrs. Kenneth Cramdell of Sacramento, Calif., and Mrs. Irwin Knipp of
Tucson, Ariz.
Friends may call at the funeral home after noon Monday where the Rosary will
be recited at 7 p.m. Monday by the Manitowoc County Council of Catholic Nurses
and at 8 p.m. by the Sacred Heart congregation.
