Donald E. Hacker, 53, of Manitowoc, a midwest truck transportation executive
and former head of the Manitowoc Musician's Union and police and fire commission,
died of an apparent heart attack in the Chicago area Wednesday. Mr. Hacker, the
father of seven children, was found dead in his motel room in suburban Melrose
Park, Ill. He reportedly had a heart ailment recently.
The Manitowoc native was general manager of J.W. Cartage Co., Milwaukee, vice
president of Modern Transportation Co., Indianapolis and vice president of Berk
Motor Service, Chicago. He was former president of Manitowoc Local 195, American
Federation of Musicians for 18 years, while playing with the Manitowoc Marine
Band and was a past president and secretary of the Manitowoc Police and Fire
Commission. He was also active in Manitowoc and Milwaukee Traffic Clubs.
While Mr. Hacker spent most of his time on business in the Milwaukee-Chicago area,
he normally returned to his Manitowoc home, 2204 W. Granger St. on weekends to
be with his family. His wife is the former Margaret LaFond of Two Rivers, whom
he married on October 15, 1931. Mr. Hacker, a native of Manitowoc graduated from
Lincoln High School there in 1928.
Surviving are his wife; five sons, Leon, Michael, Robert, Douglas and James, all
of Manitowoc; two daughters, Mrs. Roy Slotten, Twin Falls, Idaho and Mrs. Richard
Farr, Racine; his mother, Mrs. Emil Hacker, Manitowoc; a sister, Mrs. August
Hahn, Two Rivers and four grandchildren.
Services will be held at 2 pm Saturday at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home,
Manitowoc, with the Rev. Paul Blaufuss officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen
Cemetery there. Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 pm Friday.
