Les Ann was born on April 18, 1936. in Two Rivers, Wis., daughter of the late Leslie H. and Francis (Wanek) Kafka. She was a graduate of Washington High School, Two Rivers, class of 1954 and the University of Wiscosnin-Milwaukee in 1958. On July 26, 1958, she married Bjorn (Bj) Halvorsen at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Two Rivers. He preceded her in death on March 10, 1992. As a volunteer from 1959 until 1967, Les Ann partnered with Bj in the establishment of a program that would enable young adults with disabilities to realize fulfilling and productive lives through meaningful and gainful employment. After this program became a viable enterprise in the community, she devoted her professional life to Holiday House of Manitowoc County, Inc. as its Language and Speech Therapist. In 1973, Les Ann became a certified sign and oral interpreter providing services for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing residents of Manitowoc County and Northeastern Wisconsin. She held this position until her husband died in March of 1992 at which time she was appointed Executive Director of Holiday House.
Les Ann was listed in the 1966 edition of Outstanding Young Women of America and in 1978 became the first person in Wisconsin to interpret a public concert in sign language, the 25th Anniversary of the Holy Innocents Catholic Church Men's Choir. In 1982, during the International Year of People With Disabilities, Les Ann was retained by the officials from the city of Amagaski, Japan, to present a series of lectures in that country regarding the status of people with disabilities in America; and has been active in various civic, professional, business and humanitarian endeavers througout her life. He many awards and achievements were culminated when she was presented with the 2010 Manitowoc-Two Rivers Chamber of Commerce Athena Award, given to acknowledge the highest level of professional accomplishment.
Dedicated as Les Ann was to the mission of assiting people with disabilities to realize their fullest potential, she considered her personal avocation of home making and raising her children paramount to her vocation. To the date of her death, she felt grateful to her parents for the upbringing and education they provided and she deeply cherished those moments spent with her family as they prayed together, talked of their day's experience, read books together, reviewed art and craft work, worked in the kitchen or yard together, planned for holidays and parties or simply took a walk around the block or along a wooded path. She was expecially pleased when she had the opportunity to watch her family participate in theater, art, sporting events and other activities. Her children's friends, too, were important to her and she considered them special unto her death.
Her personal life was deeply enriched by other special friendships derived from affiliation with Kappa Lambda Iota sorority sisters; members of AAUW BookGroup; the Holy Innocents Men's Choir; member of the Manitowoc Deaf Community, their families and friends especially (private); the Manitowoc Sunrise Rotary Club; the (private) family of Amagasaki, Japan and the (private) family of Oslow, Norway. Her professinal mission in life was greatly enhanced by support from (private) and other members of the Association for Retarded Children, Association for the Developmentally Disabled, the Friends of Holiday House, the Borad of Directors of Holiday House, and the dedicated staff and client-workers of Holiday House.
(Survivors omitted for privacy.)
