THELMA ELLEN (MURRAY) HANSEN (d. 2004)

Thelma Hansen, (nee Murray), died in Livingston, N.J., on Jan 1, 2004. She
was 99.
Mrs. Hansen was a resident of Wauwatosa for more than 60 years before moving to
New Jersey in 2003 to be near her daughter, Sonja Rickert. The cause of death
was cardiac and respiratory failure said Mrs. Rickert.
Mrs. Hansen was born in Manitowoc on Aug. 19, 1904. She attended schools in
Manitowoc graduating from Manitowoc High School in 1922. She married Robert E.
Hansen, also of Manitowoc in 1929. Following their marriage, the Hansens moved
to New England where Mr. Hansen worked in shipbuilding. During World War II they
returned to Wisconsin where Mr. Hansen continued his involvement in shipbuilding
in Milwaukee.
For many years Mrs. Hansen was active various organizations. She had a keen
interest in history and spent many years assembling a detailed history of her
own family and ancestors. She was an avid bridge player, an activity she pursued
with passion until several months before her death.
Following the passing of her husband in 1989, Mrs. Hansen initiated a historical
research project documenting the impact of the shipbuilding industry in Milwaukee
during World War II. The assembled collection of material prepared by Mrs. Hansen
is part of the permanent collection of the Wisconsin Marine Historical Society,
which is affiliated with the Milwaukee Public Library.
Mrs. Hansen was a member of the Suburban Woman's Club, the Wauwatosa Chapter #219
Order of the Eastern Star, the First Congregational Church of Wauwatosa and an
Honored Lady of the Tripoli Shrine.
She is survived by her daughters: Joan Altenburg of Mosinee; and Sonja Rickert of
Short Hills, N.J.; her brother: Orlando J. Murray of Washington Island; six grand-
children; six great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her brothers: Lafoie Murray and Robert Murray.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of the funeral services at 11 a.m.
on Jan. 9, 2004 at the funeral home. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery in
Manitowoc at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2004.
Memorials in her name to Mayfair Interfaith, 1529 Wauwatosa Ave., Wauwatosa, would
