OLE HANSON (d. 1906)

As Captain Ole Hanson was returning to his home Saturday evening from a
birthday celebration, he suffered a heart attack and fell to the street
and died before medical help arrived. Captain Hanson was born 1845 in
Norway and came to Manitowoc in 1867. For many years he operated the
schooner “Slauson”, but had to give up command last summer because of
illness. He leaves his widow, 2 sons – Martin and Carl – and a daughter,
Mrs. Knutzen in Sheboygan. The funeral was held Tuesday.

DROPPED DEAD WHILE ON STREET
Capt. Ole Hansen (sic) Suffers Sudden Attack on Returning From Party
HEART FAILURE IS CAUSE
Walking along Ten Eyck street, on his return home from a social gathering where
he had passed the evening Saturday night, Capt. Ole Hansen (sic), a well known
resident of the city, was overtaken by death, a sudden attack of heart failure
causing his demise within a few minutes of the time he was stricken. Capt.
Hansen (sic) was accompanied by George Tremmel and the two had neared the
residence which both occupied, conversing on the way and when Tremmel received
no response to one of his questions, he turned to discover his companion on the
ground, gasping for breath and apparently in dying condition. Aid was summoned
at once and the prostrate form was hurried to the home, but death ensued before
medical attendance could reach him. The sudden death of Capt. Hansen (sic) was
a shock to family and friends.
Born in Norway July 26, 1845, Capt. Hansen (sic) was 66 years of age at the time
of his death and had resided here since 1867?. From the time of his residence
here Capt. Hansen (sic) had followed the lakes and last summer was sailing on the
schooner Slauson, of which he was part owner, with Capt. Larson. Owing to illness,
Capt. Hanson did not complete the season’s sailing but returned home some time
ago. He was not seriously ill and there was no apprehension felt by family and
friends. Saturday he had been about as usual and in the evening with a party of
friends, had attended a social and was among the gayest of the gay. Heart failure
is given as the cause of death.
Capt. Hansen (sic) was universally respected and had a wide circle of friends. He
was twice married and his widow and three children survive, being Martin Hansen
(sic), who is on the lakes and cannot be reached; Mrs. C. A. Knutzen, Sheboygan
and Carl Hansen (sic), of this city. The funeral will be held tomorrow from the
First Norwegian Lutheran church, Rev. Thorsen officiating.
