CHARLES HAUKOHL

From Der Nord Westen, 07 Sept. 1893:
Death of another old settler of Manitowoc as Carl Haukohl closed his eyes
Sat. morning. The deceased, who was well known to our readers in the city
and county of Manitowoc, was born 11 Nov. 1822 in Plau, Mecklenburg-Schwerin.
His father died shortly before Carl’s birth, so his mother married again only
to die a few years later. Then his stepfather remarried, so the young man was
literally raised by strangers. At age 24, Carl married Dorothea Schultz,
daughter of Fritz Schultz. On 07 July 1852 he arrived in New York with his
family and traveled to Milwaukee, arriving in Manitowoc on 01 Aug. 1852. He
suffered a stroke several years ago, followed by an attack of pneumonia, and
had grown weaker and weaker ever since. He is survived by his widow and 3 sons.
The funeral was held Tues. afternoon among an extraordinarily large number of
mourners at the city cemetery. Mr. Wittmann delivered the funeral oration.
(This obituary goes into much greater detail about his youth and business
activities.)
