Obituary of Eugene J. Heier
Eugene Jacob Heier, 79, founder of the Gene Heier Orchestra, a former Manitowoc resident, died Friday, March 22, 2002 at Kewaunee Health Care Center.
Funeral Services will be held at 12 Noon, Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 702 State Street at North 7th, Manitowoc. Rev. Dave Hoffman will officiate at the Mass of Christian Burial with burial at Evergreen Cemetery. Military graveside rites will be accorded by the V.F.W. Otto Oas Post #659.
Gene was born March 5, 1923, at Kellnersville, son of the late Andrew and Frances Cherney Heier. He graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1940. In 1943 he enlisted in the Army and played baritone horn with the 472nd Army Air Force Band in Dayton, Ohio and then with the 26th Division Army Band in Linz, Austria. In April 6, 1947, he formed his own orchestra, the Gene Heier Orchestra which continued for 55 years. The band performed world-wide. Gene organized the Holy Innocents School Band and served as director. At Roncalli High School he was the first Band Director. He married Ester Bielinski May 3, 1947, at Pine Grove. She preceded him in death April 8, 1972. He then married Ethel Nelson September 14, 1973, at Manitowoc. Member of Sacred Heart Parish, Manitowoc; V.F.W. Otto Oas Post #659, Manitowoc; member of Musicians Local 205-Green Bay; former member of Manitowoc Federation of Musicians Local 195 where he served as president and treasurer and a Honorary Life Member of Manitowoc Aerie F.O. Eagles #706.
Survivors include his wife, Ethel, Kewaunee; children, Tom (Marynell) Heier, Green Bay; Jan (Carol) Heier, Montgomery, Ala.; Patrick (Kimberlee) Heier, Neenah; Mary (Harold) Van Groll, Milwaukee; Barbara (David) Weber, Milwaukee; Christine Heier, Milwaukee; Ann (Doug) Young, Waukesha; Sandy (Sam) Lardinois, Denver, Colo.; Barry (Barbara) Nelson, Kewaunee; a brother, Leo Heier, Daytona Beach, Fla.; nephews other relatives and many friends also survive.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Melvin and Edward. Relatives and friends may call from 4 to 8 pm on Monday at Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home 818 State Street, Manitowoc and on Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church from 11 a.m. to the time of service at 12 Noon. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Roncalli High School-Gene Heier Music Fund 2000 Mirro Drive, Manitowoc, WI 54220 would be appreciated.
