Don Helgeson Is Dead at 43
Donald K. Helgeson, former state representative in the Wisconsin Legislature
and active in the Lakeshore community, died unexpectedly late Thursday night
at his home, 937 N. Fifth St., Manitowoc.
Mr. Helgeson, who was 43, had suffered a serious heart attack in 1971.
He had served as assemblyman for the former First Manitowoc District in the
legislature for two terms following his election in 1968. A Republican, he was
re-elected in 1970 and lost his third two-year term bid in 1972.
A native of Valders, Mr. Helgeson attended Valders High School and University
of Wisconsin-Madison, where he obtained a bachelor of science degree in
Agriculture education in 1954.
He joined Lake-to-Lake Dairy as area sales manager in 1957 and took a leave of
absence during his legislative tenure. He was associated with Hamilton Industries,
Two Rivers, since January of 1973 as accounts manager.
Mr. Helgeson served three years as president of Manitowoc United Fund, 1962, 1963
and 1965, and had also been chairman of the retail-wholesale section.
He was active in the Manitowoc Jaycees and Manitowoc Elks Lodge No. 687. The
Jaycees recognized Mr. Helgeson for outstanding community service in 1965 when the
service organization gave him its Distinguished Service Award. He was exalted ruler
of the Elks Lodge in 1964 and was named Elk of the Year in 1967.
He had been a member of the Manitowoc Chamber of Commerce and was a member of the
Kiwanis Club of Gretaer Manitowoc. Mr. Helgeson had been active for years in the
Manitowoc County Republican Party and was currently serving as chairman.
Mr. Helgeson was elected a member of the Community Advisory Committee for University
of Wisconsin-Manitowoc County Campus in 1969 and also served as a member of First
Lutheran Church Council and stewardship committee and taught Sunday School at the
church.
A veteran of the Korean Conflict, Mr. Helgeson entered the U.S. Navy in July of 1954,
serving as lieutenant junior grade. Following his three years of active service, Mr.
Helgeson was in the Navy Reserve and was commander of the Navy Reserve Unit at
Sheboygan. He attained the rank of lieutenant commander.
Mr. Helgeson is survived by his wife and three daughters, parents, a brother and a
sister.
Funeral services will be Saturday.
