Walter S. Herman, 66, of 1117 N. 17 St. Manitowoc, died Monday at Holy Family
Hospital, Manitowoc, after a lingering illness.
Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Pfeffer Funeral Home and at
10 a.m. at Holy Innocents Catholic Church Manitowoc. The Rev. Leo Schmitt will
officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.
Mr. Herman was born May 2, 1903 at Manitowoc Rapids, son of the late Fred Herman
and Mrs. Rose Wellner Herman. He married Barbara Sickinger Sept 16, 1924, at St.
Michael Catholic Church, Whitelaw and the couple lived at Manitowoc.
He was a member of the Manitowoc police force for nearly 23 years and in charge
of one of the night shifts for nine years prior to his retirement as a lieutenant
in March, 1949. Herman joined the force as a patrolman in August, 1925, and was
appointed a sergeant in July, 1935. He began work as a plainclothesman in March
1940, until assuming the night desk duties at police headquarters. He also served
as Manitowoc County undersheriff. He was later employed at Manitowoc Ship Building
Inc. until retirement in 1968. He was a member of the Holy Name Society.
Survivors include the wife; his mother; three sons, (private); four daughters,
(private); three brothers George, Robert, and Edward of Manitowoc; 26 grandchildren,
and one great granddaughter.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Wednesday where at 8 p.m. wake
services will be conducted.
