Leo Hernday Drinks Poison by Mistake
A retired Coast Guardsman and veteran of two world wars died Monday after
drinking formaldehyde by mistake.
Leo Hernday, 57, was pronounced dead in his room at the Capitol Hotel Annex,
719 Jay St., by Dr. Theodore Teitgen, Manitowoc County Coroner.
Dr. Teitgen said the death would be listed as accidental.
Police were called to the hotel shortly after 1 p.m. Monday when loud shrieks
were heard coming from Hernday’s room.
Served at Pearl Harbor
Officer found Hernday writhing in pain, and a half-empty pint bottle of
formaldehyde on a dresser.
Dr. Teitgen said the Coast Guard veteran, who had seen action during both world
wars and served at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked by Japanese bombers in
December, 1941, had been taking paraldehyde, a sedative, and apparently got the
two liquids mixed up.
Hernday, according to police, bought the formaldehyde from a city druggist.
Full military burial services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday by the VFW
Post 659 at the Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home. Burial will be in Evergreen
Cemetery
