[E2-59-2]-Ephraim Heywood/Died Oct. 1, 1880/aged 69 years

Heywood, Ephraim (often shown as Haywood) (1811-Oct. 2, 1880 –husband of Harriet Hale [married Feb. 9, 1845 at Charlestown in Sullivan County, New Hampshire –it seems no children came from this marriage] –son of Eph Heywood and Elizabeth –born in New Hampshire –in the 1850 census for the Town of Manitowoc, Ephraim and Harriet are shown living in a house with Ephraim's brother Martin and Ephraim's sister Nancy –on Aug. 10, 1854, Ephraim purchased the 80 acres of the E1/2 of the NE1/4 and the 80 acres of the E1/2 of the SE1/4 of Section 36, Town of Rockland from his brother Marin and created a farmstead at 2219 Quarry Road –Ephraim owned this farm until his death in 1880 – "Ephraim Heywood, of Rockland, died rather suddenly on Friday night. He was the brother of Nancy Heywood who was murdered about three weeks ago. He was an old man, over 69 years of age, but rather vigorous for a man of these years. On Friday he and his brother, Martin, were binding a load of hay which Ephraim intended to bring to market on the day following. While pressing down on the lever, Heywood slipped and fell. His brother, who was in the house at the time, found Ephraim lying on the threshing floor and while not feeling any pain, complained of being weak. He was taken to his house and Dr. O'Connell was summoned but the old man died before the doctor's arrival. It is a surprise to everyone that such a light fall should prove fatal, as the lever on which he was prying was only two feet from the floor." –from Manitowoc Pilot, Thursday, October 7, 1880) –buried at the Evergreen Cemetery, City of Manitowoc [no county death record]
