Married Fifty Years
Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Higgins help open house Wednesday at their home on North 10th
Street in observance of the fiftieth anniversary of their marriage and hundreds
of friends called to offer congratulations.
The marriage of Mr. and Mrs. Higgins, the latter Mary Gaffney, daughter of Philip
Gaffney, pioneer merchant of Neenah, Wis., took place in that city November 6,
1879 and the couple continued to make their home there until they removed to this
city. Mr. Higgins served as mayor of Neenah for many years and was a member of
the library board of that city.
In 1900 Mr. Higgins came to Manitowoc and organized the Manitowoc Northern Traction
Co., and built the street car line in the city and the line to Two Rivers, which
was completed May 1, 1902. The family removed to this city in 1902 and have since
resided here. They are rated as one of our best families and are held in esteem by
a wide circle of friends. Mr. Higgins is a man of good judgement and is a well read
man. Since coming here, Mr. Higgins has been identified with the progress of this
city and has helped forward all enterprises of value.
Mr. and Mrs. Higgins are the parents of three children, Miss Eva Higgins, Mrs. George
Jones and Miss Helen Higgins, all of whom are at home. There is one granddaughter,
Gwendolyn Jones whose presence in the household yesterday added to the pleasure of
the celebrants.
