Max Hiller Jr., Former Sheriff, Is Dead at 61
Max Hiller Jr., 65, former sheriff, died this morning at the farm in Manitowoc
Rapids. He had been in failing health for several months.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the St. John Evangelical
church, the Rev. Paul Blaufuss officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen
cemetery.
Mr. Hiller was born in Germany in 1888, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Max Hiller Sr.
His parents located in Minnesota in 1897, and the following year moved to this
city and in 1902 to the homestead farm on route 4, Manitowoc.
Mr. Hiller was a city and rural mail carrier for a number of years and in 1934
was elected sheriff on the Progressive ticket, serving two years. During the war
years he was employed on the submarine program at the Manitowoc Ship Building
company, and later was with the Manitowoc Equipment works until taken ill. He
never married.
He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Independent Order of Odd Fellows,
Knights of Pythias and the St. John Evangelical church.
He is survived by two brothers, Curt of Manitowoc Rapids and Richard of this city;
sister, Margaret on the home farm; niece, Mrs. Edwin Thompson of route 4, Manitowoc.
The body may be viewed at the Urbanek and Schlei funeral home after 7 p.m. Sunday
and will be moved to the church at 10 a.m. Tuesday, to lie in state until the
hour of services.
