Mr. Hollander Dies at Age 77 in Manitowoc
George E. Hollander, 77, veteran electrician and one of the first
Silver Beaver recipients in northeastern Wisconsin, died Saturday
at Memorial Hospital. He had suffered a stroke Friday Feb. 20, at
his home, 1109 Green St.
Mr. Hollander had been employed 35 years by F.C. Buerstatte Co.
and retired in 1951 after a heart attack. He had been in charge of
the company's electrical department and at the time of retirement
was secretary of the organization.
For several decades Mr. Hollander was engaged in youth work. He
had been superintendent of the Sunday School of Wesley Methodiast
Church and served as a scoutmaster in the Manitowoc Boy Scout
Council, forerunner of Waumegesako Boy Scout Council
Scout Honors
He and the late John Egan were presented with the Silver Beaver,
the highest honor scouting gives to adult workers, in 1933. At
that time they were the first in northeastern Wisconsin to be so
recognized. Mr. Hollander was president of the Boy Scout Council
1929-30.
In addition to his work with boys, he also was active in conservation.
Mr. Hollander in later years, devoted much of his leisure to painting,
a hobby developed from a series of pen and ink sketches he had pre-
pared for the late Fred W. Dicke, former Two Rivers attorney.
Born in this city March 19, 1881, he was the son of the late Emanuel
and Sophia Hempschmeyer Hollander. He was graduated in 1897 from the
old West Side High School and in September of 1907 married Lillie
Buerstatte. She died April 23, 1932, and May 26, 1934, he married
Mrs. Lillie Lahey Sollberg at Two Rivers.
Board Chairman
A member of Wesley Methodist Church, he was chairman of its Board of
Trustees, a member of the Brotherhood, past president of the Rotary
Club and a member of old Company H, now Company 3, of the National
Guard.
Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. George Markham of Two
Rivers and Mrs. Harley Lyon of Sheboygan; a son, Carl R. of the city;
four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Two sisters and
three brothers preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Wesley Methodiat Church.
The Rev. Donald T. Stannard will officiate and burial will be in
Evergreen Cemetery.
Friends may call at Jens Funeral Home after 4 p.m. Sunday and after
10:30 a.m. Monday at the church.
