ROBERT HOWARD "SARGE" HORNER

Robert H. ""Sarge"" Horner, age 78, of Manitowoc, died Tuesday, Jan. 17, 2006,
at North Ridge Medical and Rehabilitation Center. A Mass of Christian Burial
will be held on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2006, at 11 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi-
Grand Avenue Site. The Revs. Dan Felton and John Schuetze will officiate.
Military graveside services will be accorded by AMVETS Post 99. Burial will
follow at Evergreen Cemetery.
Robert was born Oct. 16, 1927, in Sturgeon Bay, son of the late Edmond and Jennie
Mero Horner. Robert attended schools in Sturgeon Bay and graduated with the class
of 1946 from Sturgeon Bay High School. He served with the U.S. Air Force from
Oct. 4, 1946, to Oct. 4, 1949, and from March 31, 1950, until May 31, 1967. He
served over 20 years of active duty during both World War II and the Korean War,
with a rank of staff sergeant until his honorable discharge in 1967. Robert
received the Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, United Nations
Service Medal, World War II Victory Medal, and the Army of Occupation Medal
(Japan). He married Irene Slavy on July 11, 1970, in Manitowoc. She preceded him
in death in September of 1974. Robert worked at Mirro Aluminum Company from 1967
until 1975 and at Park Lawn Nursing Home until his retirement in 1982. He was a
member of St. Francis of Assisi-Grand Avenue Site and a lifelong member of AMVETS
Post 99.
Robert is survived by one sister: Irene Greene, Manitowoc; sister-in-law: Grace
Horner, Two Rivers; special friends: the Rev. John Schuetze, Freedom; Donald
Leist, Manitowoc; Connie Gagner and Marvin, both of Two Rivers. Nieces, nephews,
other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents;
his wife: Irene; one brother: Edmund Horner; one brother-in-law: Hollis Greene;
close friend: Mary Luckow; and one niece: Sharon Uttenweiler.
Relatives and friends may call on Friday (TONIGHT), Jan. 20, 2006, from 5 p.m.
until 7 p.m., at The Jens Family Funeral Home, Manitowoc. A prayer service will
be held at 7 p.m. led by Deacon Paul Kieffer. Visitation will continue on Saturday
at St. Francis of Assisi-Grand Avenue Site from 10 a.m. until the time of service
at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Robert's name.
The family would like to thank Dr. Maatman, Dr. Barylak, Dr. Quazi, nurses and
staff at North Ridge Medical and Rehabilitation Center and especially, the
activities department.
