CHARLES R. HUBBARD

Charles R. Hubbard, 71, of 431 N. Fifth St., Manitowoc, a descendent of one of
the first white settlers at Manitowoc and great-grandson of the first Manitowoc
County sheriff, died Friday morning at Manitowoc Shipbuilding, Inc., after
suffering a coronary attack.
Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc,
and at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manitowoc, the Rev. Claude
LeClaire officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Graveside
military rites will be conducted by American Legion Drews Bleser Post 88.
A lifelong Manitowoc resident, Mr. Hubbard was born Jan. 4, 1895, son of the late
Charles and Mary Lenerville Hubbard. In 1913, he graduated from the old Washington
Central High School. From June 1918, to January, 1919, he served with the U.S.
Army attaining the rank of sergeant.
He married the former Helen Borths at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manitowoc,
May 3, 1928. She preceded him in death Feb. 15, 1931.
Mr. Hubbard was a member of the old Viking, city hockey and motorcycle clubs,
charter member of Sacred Heart Holy Name society and member and treasurer of
Operating Engineers Local 508. Prior to his death, he was employed for 47 years
as operating engineer for the dry docks at Manitowoc Shipbuilding, Inc. During
WWII, he was in charge of the dry docks that transported submarines from Manitowoc
to New Orleans.
Surviving are a son, Giles, of Burbank, Calif., a brother F.A. Hubbard of Park Rapids,
Minn.; a sister, Cora, of Manitowoc and a grandson. Two sisters preceded him in death.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Sunday where the Rosary will be
recited by members of the Holy Name Society and parish at 8 p.m.
