MICHAEL ANTON JACOBI, DR.

Dr. Michael A. Jacobi "Chick," age 72, of Manitowoc, died at home on Nov. 23,
2005, due to complications of Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
Dr. Jacobi was born Feb. 4, 1933, in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada, to Mike
and Mary Jacobi. He attended local schools in Saskatoon, including pre-med and
medical school at the University of Saskatchewan, with the exception of one year
of pre-med at St. Michael's College at the University of Toronto on a hockey
scholarship. In 1957, following graduation from the University of Saskatchewan
Medical School, he began his medical internship at McLaren General Hospital in
Flint, Mich. There he met the former Mary Lou Soeder. They were married Dec. 27,
1957, at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Flint. Dr. Jacobi returned to Saskatoon in
1958 for a 2-year general medicine practice. He came back to Flint's McLaren
Hospital in 1960 for a 3-year radiology residency with one year spent at Bellevue
Hospital in New York City. In February 1964, following an additional five months
of study at the University of Wisconsin Hospital in Madison, Dr. Jacobi joined
the staff at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center in Manitowoc.
There he was instrumental in starting the radiation therapy service and headed a
fund-raising program to purchase the area's first Cobalt therapy unit in 1966.
Board certified in general radiology and nuclear medicine, Dr. Jacobi began the
nuclear medicine service at Holy Family. Additionally, he was the first in the
county to become a member of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy
(ASGE), therefore able to offer the diagnostic tool of endoscopy to local
residents. In addition to his membership in the ASGE, he was a member of the
Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), American College of Radiology (ACR),
State Medical Society of Wisconsin, the Manitowoc County Medical Society, Society
of Nuclear Medicine, and the American Medical Association (AMA). Dr. Jacobi
maintained a life-long passion for athletics, winning many awards in track and
field, football and hockey during his high school and university days. His hockey
accomplishments were such that he was offered option contracts with the Detroit
Red Wings in the early 1950s. During his time in Manitowoc, Dr. Jacobi, a 35-year
member of the YMCA, rarely missed a workout. He maintained his interest in hockey
by volunteering as a coach and instructor for the Youth Hockey Program.
He is survived by his wife: Mary Lou; two daughters: Janice (Rocco) Matera of
Evanston, Ill., and Julie (Michael) Brennan of Whitefish Bay; and one son: David,
currently of Manitowoc; four grandchildren: Leslie Matera, Rocco Matera, Margaret
Brennan, Katherine Brennan; several aunts, uncles, and cousins throughout Canada
and Hungary.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Friday,
Nov. 25, 2005, (TONIGHT) at The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, where a prayer
service will be held at 7:30 p.m. led by Sr. Michael Majeskie. Funeral services
will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 26, 2005, at The Pfeffer Funeral Home,
Manitowoc, and 10:30 a.m. at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo. Officiating at the
Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. David Hoffman with burial to follow at
Evergreen Cemetery.
Dr. Jacobi's family is deeply indebted to the staff of Holy Family Memorial Medical
Center for the ultimate professional and compassionate care extended to him during
his illness. Our special thanks to Dr. Lynn Baatz and the cancer center nurses, Dr.
Jim Hoftiezer and the nurses at Woodland Clinic, Dr. Juan Diaz and the Heart Center
staff, Dr. Sean Benham, the oncology floor nurses, Susie Kornely RN and the Home
Care and Hospice staff, and the pharmacy crew.
We extend our heart-felt gratitude to Sister Michael Majeskie and Father Dave
Hoffman for their empathy and spiritual guidance throughout this difficult time.
In lieu of flowers donations would be appreciated to the local YMCA, Domestic
Violence Center and the Manitowoc Youth Hockey Program.
The Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral
arrangements.
