Mrs. Kallies, 58, Dies at Hospital
Mrs. Harold C. Kallies, a past president of the Sheboygan District of Wisconsin
Garden Club Federation and known statewide for her work in behalf of garden clubs,
died early Tuesday morning at Memorial Hospital. She had been ill for an extended
period of time.
Mrs. Kallies, 58, had resided at 1010 Lincoln Blvd.
In addition to her wide range of interest and activity in floral gardening on
local district and state levels, Mrs. Kallies had been a teacher and was elected
first Wisconsin president of the Teachers of Handicapped Children. This group was
organized in 1937, and Mrs. Kallies was elected to head the group at the time it
affiliated with the International Council of Exceptional Children.
Taught Retarded Children
A native of Manitowoc, the former Elizabeth Toomey was born May 30, 1904, daughter
of the late Daniel C. and Catherine Jorsch Toomey. She was educated at the First
Ward School and was graduated from Washington High School. Following graduation
from Milwaukee State College she taught a year at Shawano before returning to
Manitowoc in 1928.
At Manitowoc Mrs. Kallies taught the first class for mentally retarded children in
the public school system and was a teacher until her marriage to Harold C. Kallies
Jan. 29, 1944.
She was a member of Manitowoc Garden Study Club and served as its president. She
was elected president of the Sheboygan District of Wisconsin Garden Club Federation,
serving in 1956, and she was re-elected to the post the same year for another term.
Currently she had been serving as chairman of the state appreciation fund and had
been named chairman of the state convention scheduled for this city in September.
Funeral Thursday Morning
For many years Mrs. Kallies had been on the board of directors of the American
Cancer Society Manitowoc Chapter, and had worked actively for the society in a
variety of functions.
Surviving her are her husband and a brother, John Toomey of this city. A sister
and a brother preceded her in death.
Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Mittnacht Funeral Home and at
10 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church. The Rev. Alfred A. Pritzl will officiate
and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 4 p.m. Wednesday where the Rosary will
be recited at 7:30 p.m. Donations may be made to the Manitowoc Garden Study Club
or American Cancer Society.
