RESIDENT OF CO. 73 YEARS—CALLED TO REST
Henry Kansier, Pioneer of Newton, Built First House There
Henry Kansier, one of the first settlers of the town of Newton and builder of
the first frame dwelling house in the town, whose life for more than seventy
years had been spent here, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. August
Meyer, 1106 South Ninth street, last night. Mr. Kansier would have been 84 on
his next birthday, January 20, and death was due to infirmities incident to the
advanced years.
Funeral services will be held from the Meyer home Thursday afternoon at 2 o’clock,
the Rev. Schreiber officiating at the services.
Came Here as Boy of 10
Born in Mecklenburg, Schwerin, Germany in 1843, Mr. Kansier came to America with
his parents when a boy of ten years and for seventy-three years his life had been
spent in Manitowoc county. The family located on a farm in Newton which Mr. Kansier
continued to conduct until 1905 when he removed to the city and had spent his
declining years. Mr. Kansier erected the first frame home in Newton and was one of
the prominent farmers of the county.
Since the death of his wife, who was Augusta Heydlich, in May 1913, Mr. Kansier had
made his home with his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. August Meyer, South
Ninth street. He is survived by five daughters, Mrs. Mary Allwardt, Milwaukee, Mrs.
Ricka Wilda and Mrs. Emma Groelle, of Newton, Mrs. Matilda Fricke and Mrs. Meyer in
this city. Thirteen grandchildren also mourn his death.
Mr. Kansier was one of the best known residents of the county and had a large circle
of relatives and friends will learn of his death with sorrow.
