Ronald Benton Keith, age 87, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2007, at Aurora Medical Center, Two Rivers.
Ron was born on Dec. 29, 1919, in Toronto, Ontario, the son of Roy and Helen (Critchley) Keith. Growing up in Chicago and surrounding communities, Ron was known to be mischievous, once releasing a snake in class, scaring the young girls! Graduating from York Community High School, Elmhurst, Ill., in 1938, and subsequently from a Chicago engineering school, he then served in the U.S. Army during the final year of World War II. He married Helen Nash in January 1941, with whom he had four children. On June 21, 1958, he married the former Evelyne Jennings, and had three children. Ron worked throughout his career in the industrial engineering field. Settling in Manitowoc in 1968, he was employed by the Manitowoc Engineering Co., and retired in 1986 as production manager. An avid bridge player, the highlight of any given week was when he and his partner "came in first." He was an active member of The Masquers Inc., often serving as Master Builder, and the Golden K, and had at various times belonged to the Elks and Lions Clubs. He enjoyed traveling, from the ancient cities of Europe to the natural beauty of North America, visiting family and friends. An avid reader of both fiction and nonfiction, he could often be found at the local library. Ron donated his time and abilities helping senior citizens prepare taxes and was always willing to lend a hand, whether it was fixing a lamp, giving financial advice or simply listening to others' problems. He led a full life, loved his family very much and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by daughters: Joan (Peter) Iatrides, Brookfield, Ill.; Virginia (Randall) Schrantz, Madera, Calif.; and sons William, Fresno, Calif.; Michael (Janet) Metairie, Louisiana; Brent (Marguerite), Wauwatosa; and Drew (Ilaria), Milan, Italy. Grandchildren include: Jerry, John, and Jim Marquez; Jaron (Deanna) Schrantz; Joni Schrantz and fiance, Cole Gilrod; Kylie and Kaitlin Keith; Pietro, Cecilia and Anna Keith. Two great-grandchildren also survive: Karen Marquez and Mara Schrantz; plus numerous nieces and nephews. Other survivors are brothers: James (Joan) Keith, Villa Park, Ill. and Lawrence (Joan), also of Illinois; two sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law: Virginia Brewer of Meridian, Miss. and Joyce (Ed) Showalter of Neosho, Mo.; and a son-in-law: Jerry Marquez of Fresno, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter: Karen; and one brother-in-law: Robert Brewer.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2007, at Faith Formation Center (the former St. Boniface Catholic Church), 1001 Marshall St, Manitowoc. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. John Schuetze.
