Milford L. (Mel) Knutson, age 85, of 4910 Benley Court, Manitowoc, died Thursday morning, June 9, 2011.

He was born on April 23, 1926, in Manitowoc, son of the late Milford E. and Anne (Burce) Knutson. Mel was a graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High School, Class of 1944. He was a Veteran of the United States Navy serving on a destroyer in the Pacific until 1946. On May 28, 1949, he married the former Frances Mary Kasten at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Mel was employed at the Aluminum Goods Mfg. Co. (Mirro Corporation) for many years as a computer programmer and systems analyst. Since his retirement, he had accepted part-time assignments with the Lakeland Outdoor Advertising Group and First Chrysler in Manitowoc. He was a member of Elks Lodge No. 687. His interest in music resulted in many years of membership in the Manitowoc Marine Band. Prior to this, he was a member of school bands and the Navy band at Great Lakes, Illinois. He was the drummer for his naval training class in Madison. Mel belonged to the Elroy Berkholtz and Carl Laack dance orchestras for several years. He also played drums for the Ecumenical Brass at Holy Innocents Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife: Frances Knutson, Manitowoc; two daughters and sons-in-law: Barbara & Tom Lavey, Manitowoc and Ft. Myers, Florida, Mary & Pete Stelzer, Manitowoc; five grandchildren: Casey (Trevor) Irish, Sheboygan, Gregory Stelzer, Madison, Emily Stelzer, Manitowoc, Andrea Stelzer, Milwaukee, Colin (Kathryn) Lavey, Milwaukee; one sister: Sylvia Peskie, Merritt Island, Florida; and two sisters-in-law and a brother-in-law: Helen Ann & Donald Vissers, Florida, and Mary Knutson, Fayetteville, North Carolina. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. He was also preceded in death by a brother: David Knutson and a nephew: Bob Vissers. A Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2011 at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Memorial Service will be the Rev. Richard Klingeisen. Mel will be cremated at All-Care Cremation Center, Manitowoc, and will be laid to rest at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc, at a later date.

The family will greet relatives and friends at St. Francis of Assisi on Waldo, Manitowoc, from 9:30 a.m. Saturday, June 11, 2011 until 10:15 a.m.

The Pfeffer Funeral Home & All-Care Cremation Center, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
