JOHN F.A. KOEHLER (d. 1903)
Death Fri., following a long illness, of John A. Koehler, an old and respected resident of
our city. Mr. Koehler, who had enjoyed excellent health until recently, fell ill with a
stomach ailment several months ago and it was determined to be untreatable. He grew
weaker until the last flame of life flickered out on Fri. Mr. Koehler was born 29 Dec.
1828 in Altwarp, near Stettin, Pomerania. After leaving school he became a seaman and
participated in many voyages. He came to Manitowoc in 1859 where he established a
fruit store, which over time grew to a general store. He retired in 1889. He is survived by
his sorrowing widow, one son and 4 daughters. The funeral was held Mon. afternoon
amid a large number of mourners, conducted by the Odd Fellows.
