KOSSUTH MAN AUTO MISHAP
NECK BROKEN WHEN CAR GOES INTO DITCH
Christmas Eve Tragedy Near Branch Claims J. Krejcarek
Joseph Krejcarek Sr., 68, well known resident of the town of Kossuth, met death
late Thursday afternoon when the automobile in which he was driving with his son
Joseph Krejcarek Jr., left the road in making a turn of the highway, skidded and
crashed through a fence and into the ditch. Mr. Krejcarek suffered a broken neck
at the base of the skull and other injuries and died within a few minutes of the
accident, being dead when Dr. V. Kellner, of Maribel, who was summoned reached
the scene. The body was taken to the home.
Mr. Krejcarek and his son were enroute to their home near Reifs Mills, Krejcarek,
Jr., driving the car and the aged man occupying the rear seat of the Ford sedan.
At a turn in the highway a mile north of Branch the younger Krejcarek saw a car
approaching from the north and fearing a collision attempted to turn the corner.
The car skidded and went into the ditch with fatal injury to the aged occupant.
Joseph Krejcarek, Jr., the driver, escaped unhurt, suffering only a minor injury
to the knee.
Victim struck Top
From the indications Krejcarek Sr., was thrown from his seat and struck his head
against the top of the car, probably thrown back to have his neck strike the back
of the seat which caused the fatal injury. He suffered an injury to the eye, which
was badly discolored but in just what manner this was caused is unexplainable.
The car was badly damaged and some trouble was experienced in removing the body
of the unfortunate victim after the accident.
Farmer for Years
Mr. Krejcarek was one of the oldest residents of Manitowoc county and had been
engaged in farming near Reifs Mills for many years the farm being located near
the school about a mile from the Mills. He was well known in the section where
he resided.
In addition to his work in farming, Mr. Krejcarek followed the carpenter trade
and had been engaged on many contracts in the section about his home. He was
married forty-two years ago to Rose Zaruba, the widow who with seven children
survive him, the children being Fred Krejcarek, Kellnersville, Mr. Joseph Holly,
Stangelville, Mrs. John Wilhelm, Kenosha, Mrs. Reuben Groll, this city, Emil
Krajcarek, Kellnersville, Miles of this city and Joseph at home.
Ed Grimm, driver of the car which Krejcarek, 14, sought to avoid and Mr. Grimm,
who is cheesemaker at the Palm Grove Cheese factory assisted the son in caring
for the unfortunate victim of the accident and took the body of the dead man to
his home.
The funeral of Mr. Krejcarek will be held Monday morning at 9 o’clock at Reifs
Mills church and burial will be at Evergreen.
