ADOLPH KUGLER CO. YOUNGEST OLD MAN DIES
Rapids Pioneer at Age 94 Made Daily Trip to City Afoot
Adolph Kugler, Rapids pioneer who for many years enjoyed the title
of "Manitowoc county's youngest old man" died suddenly at his home
early today aged 94 years. Mr. Kugler had been ailing for two weeks
during which time he had been forced to take to his bed part of the
time but yesterday he was up and about and appeared much brighter
than for some time. Between 6 and 7 this morning he suffered the
fatal attack and passed to his rest.
A man of remarkable phisique, Mr. Kugler up to within a few weeks ago
had insisted upon making a daily visit to the city on foot scarcely
ever accepting a ride in a vehicle. His last visit to the city, however,
was made late last fall and on that occasion he was given a "lift" by a
motorist, admitting that the long walk was a bit too strenuous. However,
Mr. Kugler prided himself on his activity and insisted that when he was
unable to make the trip afoot into town, it would be time for him to
pass.
Despite his 94 years Mr. Kugler who celebrated his birthday on March 23,
was able to read his daily paper and kept in touch with world events.
Was Born in Germany
Mr. Kugler was born at Hamburg Germany, March 22, 1830 and came to
America in youth, locating in Manitowoc county which has been his home
for three score years or more. Mr. Kugler was twice married, his first
wife with whom he had three children, one of whom Mrs. P. Burke, of
Hibbing, Minn., survives, passing away nearly sixty-five years ago.
About sixty-two years ago Mr. Kugler was married a second time to Amelia
Schultz this county who preceded him death six years after the couple had
celebrated their fifty-fifth wedding anniversary. Of this later marriage
one daughter, Mrs. Anna Fitzsimmons of the state of Washington, and three
sons, Walter, Herman and Frank, all of Rapids survive.
There are twenty grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and one great
great grandchild also surviving.
Odd Fellow 52 Years
Mr. Kugler had been identified with the Odd Fellow order for fifty-two
years and was a member of Manitowoc lodge No. 194 which will have charge
of the funeral to be held Monday afternoon at 2 at Rapids. Mr. Kugler
spent many years engaged in farming and in conducting a hotel at Rapids
and was widely known throughout the county.
