Der Nord Westen, 03 Mar. 1904: "Death Thurs. in the local Holy Family Hospital of Adolph Kummer of Manito-woc Rapids after a long illness. The deceased, who was 76, came from Germany to Wisconsin shortly before the outbreak of the Civil War and served with the 17th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. At the close of the war he settled in Manitowoc Rapids where he has lived ever since. He leaves a widow, 2 sons and 3 daughters. The funeral was held Sun. afternoon in the city cemetery."
Manitowoc Citizen, Thur 3 March 1904: Adolph Kummer an aged resident of Manitowoc and a veteran of the Civil War died yesterday at the Holy Family Hospital after a lingering illness of disease incident to old age. Deceased was 76 years, his home being Manitowoc Rapids. A wife, two sons and three daughters survive. The deceased was a member of the 17th Regiment, Wis-consin Volunteers, during the war of the rebellion. The funeral will take place Sunday Afternoon at 2 o'clock from the undertaking parlors of M. Kappes on Main St. Internment being at Evergreen Ceme-tery."
History of Manitowoc County Wisconsin by Dr. L. Falge, 1911-1912, v.2, p.195-196, (part of Gus-tave Kummer bio): Adolph and Antonina (Stroeker) Kummer. Adolph Kummer came to the United States in 1830, as an orphan, when he was thirteen or fourteen years of age, and set-tled in the city of Manitowoc, where he secured employment as a cigar maker. There he was mar-ried to Antonina (Stroeker) Meyer, also a na-tive of Germany, who came to this country with her sister and brother. She had been formerly married to Valentine Meyer, by whom she had two children, who are now living in the old coun-try. Mr. and Mrs. Kummer had six children. Af-ter his marriage, Adolph Kummer moved to the town of Kossuth, where he purchased a farm and continued to live until 1877, when he removed to the town of Rapids, and at the time of his death, in 1903, he was still engaged in agri-cultural pursuits."
