PIONEER WOMAN OF COUNTY IS DEAD AT AGE 91
With the passing of Mrs. Christiana Kunze, whose death occurred Sunday, one of
the oldest residents of Manitowoc county and one of the first settlers here,
ended Life's work.
Mrs. Kunze, who was past 91 years of age, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs.
Fred Groth, rural route 2, Sunday night.
"Grandma" Kunze, as she was known to the older and younger generation, had been
a resident of Manitowoc county for sixty-six years, all that time making her home
in the town of Newton where her parents settled when they came from Germany where
she was born. The family came here in 1856 and three years later, in 1859, she
was married to Joseph Kunze, who preceded her in death many years ago. For years,
since her husband's death Mrs. Kunze had made her home with her daughter Mrs.
Groth, at her death the only survivor of the family, another daughter Mrs. Anton
Huebner having died several years ago.
Up to six months ago Mrs. Kunze had been in fair health but since that time she
has failed steadily until death came to relieve her.
Besides her daughter Mrs. Kunze is survived by one brother William Hacker, Clark
street this city and there are five grandchildren Edward Huebner, Mrs. Louis
Carstens, of Potters, Paul and Althea Groth and Mrs. Roland Schmitz, this city.
Five great grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services will be held from the Groth home Friday afternoon at 1:30 and
burial will be at Evergreen cemetery in this city.
