HENRY LADWIG, FORMER COLOR SERGEANT OF H, DEAD
(Influenza Claims Former Officer of Old National Guard Company Here)
Influenza claimed as a victim, early this morning, Henry Ladwig, 41 years of
age, perhaps as well known to Manitowoc residents as any personage in the city.
Nearly seven feet tall, and of robust and striking stature, the deceased was for
years color sergeant of Company H, Second Wisconsin Infantry, W.N.C., at the
time that Company H of this city was the color company of the Second Wisconsin
regiment. Mr. Ladwig, by reason of his physique, assumed the role of "Uncle Sam"
in numerous patriotic pageants and parades in Manitowoc in the last several
years. He was taken ill with influenza a few days ago. He was apparently
recovering when last Thursday, pneumonia set in and he failed rapidly, passing
away at an early hour this morning at the family home, South Tenth and Green
streets. The deceased was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Christoff Ladwig, and was born
in this city on Aug. 7, 1877. He has always made his home here. He was married
to Miss Minnie Schmidt, who with one son, Kenneth, one sister, Lillian and the
parents survive. When Company H was reorganized here after the Spanish American
war, Henry Ladwig was one of the first to enroll and when Company H was named
the color company of the Second Wisconsin infantry, the deceased was appointed
color sergeant. He continued as a member of Company H for seven years. For a
number of years he conducted the White Front cafe on Washington street and for
the last six years has been in charge of the cafe at Green and South
Tenth street. The deceased was a member of the local Moose lodge. The funeral
will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home on South Tenth street,
with interment at Evergreen Cemetery. - Manitowoc Herald News,Tuesday, October
