KAREN H. LARSEN

ONE OF CITY EARLY PIONEERS IS SUMMONED
Mrs. Karen Larson(sic) Passes Away at Age of 83 Here Today; One of First of
Norwegian Settlers
Another of the early pioneers, one of few survivors of the Norwegian colony
which pioneered the section, passed away today in the person of Mrs. Karen
Larson, whose death occurred at the age of 83 at her home, Fifth and Huron
streets. Mrs. Larson's death was hastened by a stroke which she suffered late
yesterday and which her age made it impossible to cope with. Although not in
robust health for some time, Mrs. Larson had not been seriously ill and her
death is a shock to family and friends.
Mrs. Larson, nee Hanson, was born in Larvik, Norway, Dec. 15, 1844 and removed
with her parents to this country in 1851 at the age of seven, coming directly
to this city where the family was to play an important part in the building
of the city. In 1866 Mrs. Larson was married to Bore Larson (Omra), a follower
of the Lakes, whose life was claimed when the schooner Glenn Cuyler capsized
off the north end of Door County. Four children survive to mourn the passing
of their mother, all residing in this city, being one daughter, Iunia and
three sons, Hilbert, Benhardt and William. Mrs. Larson is also survived by two
brothers, Richard N. Hansen and Edgar Hansen, both of this city and two sisters,
Mrs. Mary Terkelson of Taoma, Wash., and Mrs. H.C. Hoverson of Milwaukee.
Except for fifteen years, which the family spent in Merrill, 1906 to 1921,
Manitowoc has always been their home.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 oclock from the home
to the First Lutheran church, where the Rev. Ristad will conduct ceremonies
at 3 o'clock. Burial will take place at Evergreen.
