James (Fuzz) LaVarnway Sr., age 75, of River's Bend Medical and Rehabilitation Center, Manitowoc, died Friday, Feb. 25, 2005 at River's Bend. James was born July 17, 1929 in Kingsford, Mich., son of the late Harold and Alice Quinn LaVarnway. He was a graduate of Kingsford High School with the class of 1948. He then was a graduate of Acme Tool and Die Design of Manitowoc. Fuzz served with the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict from 1950 until his honorable discharge in 1952. He then married the former Faye M. Hanson on June 20, 1953 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church of Iron Mountain, Mich. Jim started his career as a tool and die maker for Aluminum Specialty Co. of Iron Mountain. Fuzz was then transferred to Aluminum Specialty of Manitowoc and retired at Mirro Aluminum as a tooling engineer in 1994 serving a total of 41 years for the company. Fuzz was one of the first Hunter Safety instructors in the Manitowoc area from 1966 to 1997. He was responsible for instructing thousands of students for more than the 31 years. He also volunteered his time for Manitowoc United Way and served on the Human Services Board as its secretary. Jim and Faye served as president and vice president of the A.M.I. (Alliance for the Mentally Ill) now known as N.A.M.I. Survivors include his wife: Faye LaVarnway of Manitowoc; one son: Jim LaVarnway Jr. of Whitewater; one daughter and son-in-law: Janet and Bob Bonin of Manitowoc; three grandchildren: Ashley, Kyle and Samantha Bonin; one brother and sister-in-law: Roy and Noleen LaVarnway of Kingsford, Mich.; one sister and brother-in-law: Phyllis and Bob DiBiase of Kenosha; six sisters-in-law and two brothers-in-law: Sister Loretta Jean of Arizona; Belva Hanson and Colleen Schmitt, both of Iron Mountain; Jean and Tom Hinz of Sun Prairie; Sharon and Richard Toth of Green Bay; and Pat Hanson of Norway, Mich. Jim was preceded in death by two brothers in infancy; two sisters: Verna and Gladys; and two brothers-in-law: Robert Hanson and John Schmitt. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 28, 2005 at St. Paul Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Officiating will be the Rev. David Hoffman. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc, where graveside military rites will be accorded by the VFW Otto Oas Post #659. Visitation will be Sunday, Feb. 27, 2005 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Pfeffer Funeral Home and Cremation Care Center, Manitowoc, where there will be a prayer service conducted at 6:30 p.m. by Deacon Allan Boeldt and again Monday at St. Paul Catholic Church from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent for a memorial to be established at a later date. The family would like to thank the staff of River's Bend for their support and attentive care given to Jim these past five years. Jim was also a friend of Bill W.'s for more than 30 years.
