FORMER CITY OFFICIAL, EMIL MARTENS, CALLED BY DEATH
Well Known South Side Merchant Victim of Heart Trouble from which
He Had Been Sufferer for Long Time
Emil Martens, well known south side merchant and former member of
the city council from the First ward, died at his home on Tenth
street yesterday afternoon, aged 52 years. The funeral will be held
Monday under auspices of the Royal League of which he was a member.
The death of Mr. Martens, which comes as a shock to friends, was due
to heart affection from which has suffered for sometime and for which
there was no cure, Mr. Martens having realized for several months
that death might claim him at any time. He had been up and about until
recently.
Mr. Martens was engaged in business at Tenth and Marshall streets for
years and was well and favorably known. He served several terms as a
member of the city council from the First ward and took an active
interest in public affairs. He was popular with a large circle of
friends. Decedent is survived by three sisters, Misses Ida, Mathilda,
and Serena Martens and by one brother, Henry Martens, supervisor from
the Third ward. Mr. Martens was born in the city in 1864 and had always
made his home here.
