Winford R. 'Windy" Miller, age 87, of Manitowoc, died Friday evening, Sept. 16, 2005 at Hannah Home, Manitowoc. Windy was born Jan. 19, 1918, in Green Bay, son of the late Orville and Susie Oshwaldt Miller. He graduated from Manitowoc Lincoln High School with the class of 1936. Windy served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II as an instructor and inspector of B-29s both stateside and overseas in Guam. On Oct. 17, 1944, he married the former Shirley Barker in Pratt, Kan. She preceded him in death on Oct. 9, 2004. Windy was an assistant manager at S.S. Kresge in Flint and Jackson, Mich. The couple then moved back to Manitowoc where he obtained employment at Manitowoc Engineering Company in the parts department, retiring in 1980. Windy played semi-pro football and was an original member of the Manitowoc Galloping Gaels. He was inducted into the Manitowoc Semi-Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1997. Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law: Nancy and Donald Duckart of Manitowoc; one son and daughter-in-law: Gregg and Annette Miller of Baraboo; four grandchildren: Timothy and Lisa Duckart, Dana and Jamie Kornely, Kelly Miller, Stacey Miller; one step granddaughter: Mikki Maddox; three great-grandchildren: Ernie Gillespie, Alyssa and Tyler Duckart; one sister-in-law: Vi Miller of Manitowoc; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by four brothers: Orville, Alvin, Gordon and Cyril Miller; and two sisters: Mildred Hanson and Mae Ritzmann. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2005, at Wesley United Methodist Church. Officiating at the service will be the Rev. Janis Callahan with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Military Graveside rites will be accorded by the VFW Otto Oas Post No. 659 of Manitowoc. The family will greet relatives and friends at Wesley United Methodist Church from 10 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 20, 2005, until the time of services. The family wishes to send a special thank you to the staff at the Hannah Home, Manitowoc, for their compassionate care and support given to Windy and his family. The Pfeffer Funeral Home & Cremation Care Center, Manitowoc, is assisting the family with funeral arrangements.
