Jackie Nelson (nee Arndt), 75, a Whitelaw resident, passed away Nov. 12, 2011, at Aurora Medical Center, Two Rivers, after a courageous hard fought battle with cancer.

She was born on Aug. 6, 1936, daughter of the late Curtis and Dorothy (Walker) Arndt in Nixa, Mo. Jackie graduated high school in Nixa, Mo., and worked most of her life at the Manitowoc Clinic, first as a switchboard operator, then as a medical secretary until her retirement.

Jackie loved music and much of her life was spent singing and playing bass guitar in a Country Western Band known as Cool Country Duo, then Cool Country Express. Jackie inspired in her children and grandchildren the love of music (though not necessarily country and western, right Mom!). Music soothes the heart and spirit.

She worked hard in her life and cared for her family and friends with her whole heart, teaching us that love and family is much more important than things. Jackie was proud of her family and rejoiced in their accomplishments, she taught us the importance of what love and hard work can achieve. Jackie after all, led not only by words, but by example.

Jackie is survived by her four children: Britt Nelson, Candi Klein, Evelyn and Eric Glaeser, Gail and Jim Brander; nine grandchildren: Ryan Nelson and special friend, Brittany Zahn, McKayla Nelson and special friend, Gerald Meerschaert, Ben Nelson, and mother: Tori Nelson; Eric Kolar and special friend, Nicolette, Christopher and Jana Kolar, Cassandra Glaeser, Zachary Glaeser, Michelle Peterman, and Crystal and David Van Seggern; two great-grandchildren: Angel and Zoe Kolar; two brothers and sisters-in-law: Curt and Cynthia Arndt, Carl and Carol Arndt; a sister: Joyce Williams; two brothers-in-law: Craig Anhalt and Danny Call; as well as many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews, who were all valued in her love of family. Her nieces, Rosie Soulier and Paula (Owens) Walters, and nephew and his wife, Gregg and Sharon Owens, who thought of her as their second mother, were a source of encouragement and faith to her, as mom was to them. Jackie had special friends: Dorothy, Ethel, Cheryll, Louise, and Betty Lou, who stood beside her on this rocky road. She loved dogs: Sarah, JoJo and Chloe, who helped to brighten her life.

Jackie is preceded in death by a very special grandson: Lucas Peterman; a nephew: Matt Williams; five sisters: Doris Owens, Lois Lewellen, Karen Anhalt, Janet Call, Elizabeth Ann Arndt; a brother: Joseph Arndt; and a brother-in-law: Rick Williams.

Cremation has taken place at All-Care Cremation Center and a memorial service for Jackie will be held at 12 (Noon) on Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2011, at the Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc. Jackie will be laid to rest at a later date at Evergreen Cemetery.

The family will greet relatives and friends on Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2011, from 9 to 11:45 a.m. at the Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials be made out in Jackie's name to the Make-A-Wish Foundation or the American Cancer Society .

Our family would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Barylak and those who took such good care of our mother at the Vince Lombardi Cancer Center and at Aurora Medical Center. She loved and was thankful (as we are) for everything you did for her and as a family, we cannot thank you enough for the time you gave us with her. Dr. Barylak (who she often told us she's known and worked with since the first day he came to the Manitowoc Clinic), we thank you for being both mom's doctor and friend.

As mom would always say - One day at a Time...
