Charles E." Charlie" Schmoekel, age 95, of 931 Rosemere Circle, Manitowoc, died Thursday afternoon, June 23, 2011, at River's Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Charles was born on January 29, 1916, in Dearborn, MI, son of the late Edward and Marie (Lowe) Schmoekel. He grew up in Dearborn and graduated from Melvindale High School in 1933. He attended the University of Michigan and Purdue University.
On November 22, 1941, he married the former Lorraine A. Adler in Detroit, MI. Charles was a World War II Army veteran serving from 1942 to 1946. He was a Staff Sgt. with the special engineers in the Manhattan Project. He moved to Manitowoc in 1968 and worked as an engineer with Kelvinator and retired after 43 years as an engineer. He was a member of First Lutheran Church, American Chemical Society and the Laubach Literacy Council.
Survivors include his wife: Lorraine Schmoekel, Manitowoc; three daughters and sons-in-laws: Marilyn (Stewart) Gloyer, Richmond, VA; Carol (Mark) Loessel, Macomb, MI; Nancy (Tom) Madej, Montgomery Village, MD; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren; one sister Ruth Priestaf, Dearborn, MI. Other relatives and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents: Edward and Marie Schmoekel; and one brother-in-law: Harold Priestaf.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, June 29, 2011, at First Lutheran Church, 521 North 8th Street, Manitowoc. Rev. Roald Harswick will officiate with burial to take place at Evergreen Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. The Jens Family Funeral Home & Crematory is assisting the Schmoekel family.
