Bernice Jane Rector
Ocotber 23, 1922 - May 10, 2012

Bernice was born in Grays Harbor, Washington. During her early childhood, her parents moved to the Majestic Hood Canal in the Puget Sound. She resided at the Medrona Lodge, right on the water of Hood Canal.Bernice attended Irene S. Reed High School in Shelton, Washington. It was here she met her life long "sweet heart" Mike Rector. She followed Mike to the University of Washington, where she was a nursing major. They were later married in 1943. During the early years of marriage, they moved around the county based on Mike's naval assignments during WWII. After the end of WWII she and Mike moved to Sacramento and then to Bakersfield in 1957. Bernice gave birth to seven children, one passed away at birth. She was very active and involved in her children's' lives. Though she was not Catholic, she agreed to raise all the children in the Catholic faith. When someone would question why she did not convert to Catholicism, she would say "I am more Catholic then those kids since I helped them all with their religious studies and projects." Bernice and Mike sent all six of their children to Garces Memorial High School. She remained a supporter of Garces until the time of her death. Bernice loved a lot of things: chocolate, vacations in Santa Barbara, watching her favorite TV shows, an avid reader, swimming, a political debate with anyone who was not a Democrat, but most of all she loved her children and grandchildren. Bernice is proceeded in death by her parents Guy and Katherine Allison, her brother John "Jack" Allison, her husband Michael Rector, and her daughter Barbara Blakemore. She is survived by: John Rector (Carmen), Kathy Francone (Frank), Doug Rector, Bill Rector (Whitney), Kim Ashonti (David). Her grandchildren: Zachary, Christian, Ciera, Alison, Matt, Elizabeth, Tristen, Taylor, Dan, Hannah, Molly, Jeremy and Nikolas. Special thanks to Around the Clock Companion Care and Hoffman Hospice for their amazing care of our mother. On Wednesday, May 16, 2012 at Greenlawn Mortuary (River Blvd) as requested by our mom, there will be a short graveside service officiated by Monsignor Craig Harrison. www.bakersfield.com/obits
